Monday 29th November 2021
Dear Year 5,
Welcome to Year 5 home learning. We do hope you are feeling ok and wish you well during your period of isolation at home.
If you are feeling well and able, there are a number of tasks for you to complete at home during this week. Use the various documents below. There is one Maths activity per day. Please click on the 'Maths timetable and links' pdf and use the various links to find worksheets and videos to support your learning.
This week in English we are learning how to write a balanced argument. We will be considering the question, 'Should children have unlimited screentime?'
Task 1. Please complete the 'for and against' sheet, thinking of as many reasons as possible for and against this argument. What are the benefits of children being able to use screens such as mobiles/consoles/tablets? What are the negatives of too much screentime?
Task 2. When you have done this, read the example Balanced argument, 'Should Skateboards be allowed at school?' Read it for a second time and note the features of a balanced argument. Annotate these features on your sheet, underlining or highlighting examples.
Task 3. Watch the BBC Bitesize video, 'How to write a Balanced Argument'. Click here to go straight to the video.
RE
Fame and Christianity.
Last week we considered how some people who become famous and successful share various attributes or personality traits with those who are committed Christians. We considered traits such as having passion, dedication, resilience and faith. To follow up, please research one of the following famous Christians: Lewis Hamilton, Cristiano Ronaldo, HRH Queen Elizabeth II, CS Lewis or Dan Walker; and answer the questions on the worksheet, 'RE Famous people and Christianity.'
SPaG:
Please ask a member of your family to test you on last week's spelling words- ideally, what happens to the words when -ly is added and they become adverbs. Remember there are different rules for different word endings e.g. complete becomes completely, but steady becomes steadily and sensible loses the last letter (e) to become sensibly.
Please check here for updates tomorrow for a new spelling pattern.
This week's homework task is a follow up to your biography interview. This week we would like you to write a biography of your subject. Please see the 'Biography proforma,' for details.
Happy learning!
