The Wider Curriculum

Core texts

The books which support the core theme for each half term are carefully chosen to cover the full range of genres, real and fictional worlds, heroes and heroines and opportunities to discuss moral and social dilemmas. Texts are selected to allow children to explore the wider curriculum for each year group. Core texts offer challenging vocabulary and content, often inspiring children to explore text themes that have not explored before. As in RE, children are encouraged through discussion and drama, to explore their responses to the lives, problems and values of others and the social restraints or opportunities characters encounter. We value the enabling capacity of the arts to develop imagination, inspiration, co-operation, self-confidence and tenacity, while communicating moral and social values. Through debate, role play, writing for a variety of purposes, poetry and play scripts the children are able to express their understanding of the richness and challenge of the lives of others.
