KS1

The next step for our Early Mathematicians

Our aim in Year 1 and 2 is to build on the foundations developed in the Early Years. We use a variety of resources which are exciting and engaging and age appropriate for what they are learning.

Below is a breakdown of the times of year where various areas of maths are covered. The precise timings of these will be down to individual teachers and will change each year based on their on-going assessment of the children in their classes.

"When I'm learning Maths I know that it will help me when I'm a grown up."

Mastering Number

This is introduced to the children in Reception and is continued in Year 1 and 2. Mastering Number aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. In Year 1 they start by consolidating the Early Learning Goals and continue to explore and become fluent with the composition of numbers within 10. The children will begin to look at numbers greater than 10, using '10 and a bit'. In Year 2 they begin by consolidating their composition of numbers within 10 and by the end of Year 2 they will be fluent in the composition of numbers from 11 - 20. This will help the children to develop factual fluency and confidence and flexibility with number. This is the foundation for using and applying numbers in KS2.
