English (including Reading)

English at Archdeacon Cambridge's

At Archdeacon Cambridge’s CE Primary School, English is taught daily as a subject in its own right as well as through cross-curricular links with other subjects. We use the National Curriculum as the starting point for our planning, in conjunction with resources from the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE).

Our main aim in English is to develop eloquent and articulate children who are confident to read and write for a purpose as well as for their own enjoyment. We want children to enjoy English as an interactive, exciting and engaging subject. We aspire to demonstrate the importance of English in terms of its centrality to other areas of learning but also its practical applications in day-to-day life.

We strive to enrich children’s learning in English with opportunities to learn in a variety of contexts, for example developing descriptive vocabulary through visits to outdoor environments. Many other school trips and visitors also help to enrich learning in English, such as visits from authors. Drama is given a prominent position in our English teaching, with visits from Freshwater Theatre group to support learning.
