Place Value
In Year 4, before we begin any calculation work, the children need to gain an understanding of what each number in a four digit number represents. Children will use this knowledge to access more difficult concepts as the year progresses. You can find more information and practise this skill using the links below

Addition and Subtraction 

 

Children will use their strong understanding of place value to add and subtract two 4 digit numbers using exchanging. 

 

We use concrete resources to physically show the children why an exchange is needed. Please see the video below for video aimed at Key Stage 2 children and their parents.
